A martenitsa is an ornament made of white and red wool, worn from March 1st until the end of March.

With the arrival of spring, the traditional Baba Marta (Grandmother Marta) days begin. Baba Marta is a time-honored tradition unique to Bulgaria. On this day, Bulgarians gift symbols called "martenitsas" to their loved ones, wishing them health and strength throughout the year.

The white color used on martenitsas represents long life, while red represents health and strength.

According to tradition, martenitsas are carried until they see a swallow or stork and tied to a spring branch.
